Sistine Chapel Fresco 500th Anniversary: Despite Volume, No Plan To Limit Tourists (PHOTOS)

VATICAN CITY ? Five centuries after Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes were inaugurated at the Sistine Chapel, at least 10,000 people visit the site each day, raising concerns about temperature, dust and humidity affecting the famed art.

But a Vatican Museums official says there are no plans to try to limit tourists' access.

Museums director Antonio Paolucci cited concerns about the visitor numbers in an article in the Vatican newspaper on Wednesday, the 500th anniversary of the frescoes' inauguration by Pope Julius II.

Like Julius, Pope Benedict XVI plans to celebrate Vespers in the chapel Wednesday evening.

Paolucci says that sometimes as many as 20,000 people daily visit the chapel. But he says that for the time being "the adoption of a maximum number (of visitors) will not be necessary."

(AP) ? A major reshuffle of India's Cabinet left one question dangling: Where is Rahul Gandhi?

The scion of India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is not among the new ministers, meaning that if ? as expected ? he leads his Congress party into 2014 elections he will be running for prime minister without ever having held a government post of any kind.

"I would have been happy to include Rahul in the Cabinet, but he has other preoccupations in the party," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday in announcing his new Cabinet.

Singh, a technocrat, was chosen to fill the prime minister's seat in 2004 by Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi's mother. Singh was widely seen as a regent, keeping the seat warm until Rahul Gandhi ? the son, grandson and great-grandson of Indian prime ministers ? was ready to take his birthright.

But Gandhi has displayed little public sign that he is undergoing any sort of apprenticeship that would prepare him for running the country.

His allies argued he was rebuilding the party at the grassroots level and has taken a lead in the Congress' campaigns in state elections in Uttar Pradesh and in Bihar in recent years. The party performed poorly in both elections.

Gandhi has also positioned himself as the defender of the common people, joining protesters at land rights demonstrations and even getting briefly arrested. But in moments of crisis, he has rarely taken the lead, preferring to defer to Singh or his mother. His forceful speech against corruption in Parliament last year ? during a major anti-graft protest against the government ? was notable for its rarity.

Political analysts say that Gandhi's refusal to take a Cabinet position, and be held accountable for the workings of a government ministry, could prove to be a handicap when the time comes to face the electorate.

"Definitely, the expectations were that Rahul Gandhi would move on from being a learner and take on more responsibility," said Aarthi Ramachandran, who has written a book on him.

It would have helped Gandhi's own credibility if he had taken a position in the government or a ministry where he could have shown results, she said.

"The party could have gone to the people during the election campaign and said, 'This is what Rahul Gandhi has done for the people,'" she said.

Congress leaders said Gandhi would concentrate on reviving the party's fortunes ahead of the national elections instead of being responsible for a narrow Cabinet position.

Digvijay Singh, a Congress general secretary, indicated that Gandhi was expected to assume a larger role in the party hierarchy and an announcement on this was expected in the coming week.

Calls to Gandhi's office were not answered. It was possible that he did not want to be too closely associated with the current government, which has been tainted by a raft of scandals.

The reshuffle Sunday ? needed, in part, to fill seats left vacant after a coalition partner bolted ? brought seven new ministers into the Cabinet and saw the entry of 15 junior ministers in a restructuring that brought younger faces into the leadership.

Former Law Minister Salman Khurshid, who was named the new foreign minister, is 20 years younger than his predecessor, and most of the other ministers sworn in Sunday are in their 50s or early 60s. In Indian politics, that is considered to be a relative youth movement. Singh said the shuffle was the last major Cabinet shake-up expected before the next national election.

But even in promoting some of the younger Congress lawmakers, the party leadership is cautious that they know their place.

"It's an unspoken rule in the Congress that nobody can, or will be allowed to outshine Rahul Gandhi among the younger lot," Ramachandran said.

Other analysts say working among the rural poor, as Gandhi has been doing for the past few years, will give him far greater insight than holding a ministerial job.

"At this point, the need to repair the Congress' image is a greater priority because of the various scams and allegations leveled against the party," said Vinod Sharma, a political analyst with the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Mavs suspend G West for 2nd time in 10 days

DALLAS (AP) ? Mavericks guard Delonte West was suspended Thursday for the second time in as many weeks for conduct detrimental to the team, putting his future in Dallas in doubt.

The first suspension lasted about a day, but a series of tweets by West soon after the team announced the latest suspension raised questions about whether he would return this time.

"Just dont kick me ... on the way out the door," West tweeted. "I didn't do anything to deserve that."

The last of several tweets in just a few minutes said, "I'm just sittin here across from the arena wit tear in my eyes."

West has bipolar disorder and addressed that topic in another tweet, saying "no I'm not off my meds."

After practice Thursday, coach Rick Carlisle refused to elaborate on West, referring to the release from the team announcing the suspension but disclosing no specifics about his conduct.

Donnie Nelson, the team's president of basketball operations, said only that the suspension was effective immediately and no other statements would be issued. The reason for the suspension was the same as the first one that came following an outburst in the locker room after a preseason game Oct. 15.

Carlisle informed players of the latest suspension before practice.

"We're losing a competitor. That's plain and simple. He's a competitor," veteran forward Vince Carter said.

When reached by ESPNDallas.com on Thursday, West said he was being blamed for an argument between teammates after the Mavs' 88-76 preseason loss to the Oklahoma City on Wednesday night in Wichita, Kan. He said he got a text Thursday morning telling him not to come to practice.

"There was an argument between two teammates in the locker room last night that didn't involve me," West told ESPNDallas. "Somehow I'm being blamed for it. I had nothing to do with it. I don't know what's going on."

Carter wasn't with the team for Wednesday night's game. He didn't know about the suspension until he got to practice and hadn't spoken to West.

"It's just a sensitive situation right now. It's not much I can say, I wasn't around to even know what's going on. It's unfortunate," Carter said. "He's my friend, so I want the best for him, and you hope they work the situation out."

Asked if the situation with West could be resolved quickly like the first one, Carlisle again said he wasn't commenting about the guard.

Players wouldn't go into detail about how the situation was explained to them by Carlisle.

"He said what he needed to say and it is what it is. ... Things happen we have no control over," said Shawn Marion, who like Carter remained in Dallas instead of playing in Wednesday's game. "I like Delonte. He's got stuff he needs to work out with them (team management). ... We've still got to go on and focus on our task at hand."

West's latest suspension came five days before the Mavericks open the regular season Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

The Mavs will start the season without Dirk Nowitzki, their 11-time All-Star who is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. Chris Kaman, their other 7-footer, is dealing with a strained right calf that makes him questionable for the opener.

"All these things happen, these are part of everyday life in the NBA," Carlisle said. "We've got a lot of veterans that have been through situations where there have been injuries and all kinds of different things. You've got to just. The bus keeps going, got to keep soldiering on."

Instead of lamenting the players not available, Carlisle said his team was going to push forward with the ones they have.

West was suspended for the first 10 games of the 2010-11 season after pleading guilty to weapons charges in Maryland. Authorities say he was carrying three loaded guns and a knife when he was stopped for speeding on a three-wheel motorcycle in 2009.

West was a valuable role player for Dallas last season, even starting 33 games as the backcourt struggled with injuries before he was sidelined himself by a broken finger.

The Mavericks' backcourt grew crowded in the offseason, though. Darren Collison was acquired from Indiana and is expected to start at point guard. O.J. Mayo, a shooting guard, signed as a free agent from Memphis and could be counted on heavily for scoring while waiting for Nowitzki's return.

West played in all seven preseason games, averaging 5 points and 2 assists while playing nearly 18 minutes a game. The eighth-year pro was close to his career averages with the Mavericks last year, at 9.6 points and 3.2 assists.

(AP) ? South Korean consumer electronics maker LG Electronics Inc. reported a third straight quarterly profit on Wednesday as sales of smartphones designed for faster wireless networks helped end losses at its mobile phone business.

LG forecast higher smartphone sales for the current quarter but warned lower seasonal demand for home appliances and air conditioners may result in a decline in overall profit. LG's mobile business also faces stiff competition in the premium smartphone market dominated by Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics.

LG Electronics said its net profit totaled 157 billion won ($142 million) for the three months ended Sept. 30, compared with a 414 billion won loss a year earlier. Sales fell 4 percent to 12.4 trillion won as LG sold fewer low-end cellphones and the weak economy pressured demand for TVs.

The result was better than expected. LG's shares closed up 1.4 percent in Seoul following the earnings announcement.

The maker of Optimus G smartphones lost money in the last two quarters of 2011 before returning to profit in the first quarter of this year when the mobile communications division made a small profit.

Its forecast-beating performance in the third quarter mainly stemmed from a surprise profit at LG's mobile business. Some analysts had forecast its mobile business to continue losing money for a second straight quarter after losing 57 billion won in the April-June period.

But LG's mobile communications division earned 22 billion won and sold more than 7 million smartphones, the highest quarterly sales for the company and a sign that its smartphones are growing in popularity.

LG credited demand for smartphones that run on faster "LTE" networks, which are taking off in South Korea, Japan and the United States. It sold 14.4 million mobile phones during the three months, with smartphone sales accounting for half of the volume. More than 70 percent of its mobile revenue came from smartphone sales.

Although its mobile profit and smartphone sales still pale in comparison to those of Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc., the latest result puts LG among the few global mobile manufacturers that are on track for a recovery. Nokia and Research In Motion are still struggling to pull off a turnaround.

Analysts expect LG's mobile business to report its first annual profit in three years. LG's mobile communications division lost more than 900 billion won in 2010 and 2011 combined as it ceded market share to Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy brands.

But they are skeptical that LG's mobile business will be as profitable as those of Samsung or Apple, as growth of high-end smartphone sales could slow in developed countries and Chinese smartphone makers are advancing in low-end smartphone markets.

"Although LG isn't expected to post as high a profit as Samsung, it is on track to report profit in mobile business," said Kwon Sung-ryul, an analyst at Dongbu Securities. Kwon said the Optimus G smartphones and other models in the pipeline will increase its smartphone sales in coming quarters.

The company also needs to have a blockbuster smartphone, like the Galaxy or Apple's iPhone, to strengthen its position in the smartphone market.

Industry watcher says LG is the maker of Google's upcoming Nexus smartphone, expected to be announced next week.

LG reported a quarterly operating profit of 221 billion won compared with a 32 billion won operating loss a year earlier.

Royal Bank of Canada (TSE: RY) Buys Ally Financial

Ally Financial, known prior to a 2010 name change as GMAC, has been trying to dig itself out of $17.2 billion in debt from a government bailout that left it virtually a state-owned enterprise with the U.S. taxpayer owning as much as 74 percent of the company. The sale of its Canadian assets to RBC is leaving Ally Financial with $620 million above liquidation value.

For RBC, Canada's largest bank, the deal advances CEO Gordon Nixon's plan to find U.S. assets to bolster earnings in light of a slowdown in Canadian consumer lending.

The deal is RBC's biggest takeover after a $2.16 billion acquisition of Centura Banks in 2001, according to Bloomberg News.

As part of the deal, RBC agreed to provide low-rate auto loans for vehicle purchased from the Canadian unit of General Motors Company (NYSE: GM).

Toronto-Dominion Bank (NYSE: TD), a major competitor of RBC, announced almost at the same time that it was acquiring the consumer credit card portfolio from Target Corporation (NYSE: TGT) for equal to the gross value of the outstanding receivables for around $5.9 billion, depending on when the deal closes.

RBC shares fell 2.66 percent to C$57.04 ($57.42).

Actually, U.S. Military Still Uses Lots of Horses and Bayonets

Oct 23, 2012 10:00 AM EST

Click if you like this post!

Last night during the final presidential debate of 2012, President Obama said we have "fewer horses and bayonets" during an exchange with Governor Mitt Romney. The comments were condescending, belittling and Obama implied the use of bayonets and horses was obsolete. This is not the case. Yes, Obama said "fewer" rather than "not at all," but let's take a look at how the military uses horses and bayonets today.

First, the Marines. The Marines have an entire page on their website dedicated to the bayonet, which is used in close combat situations.

Photobucket

HorseChannel.com recently published an article about how horses are used in the Army to climb rough terrain in Afghanistan.

At Smith Lake Stables, adjacent to Fort Bragg, N.C., 36 horses are owned by the U.S. government and serve their country in two assignments. In one assignment, they act as equine ambassadors, linking the civilian public to the military. The horses are used in an annual summer camp program and in weekly day camp activities for home-schooled kids. But the horses? most important role is their real job. They help prepare active duty personnel, particularly Army Special Forces troops, for challenges in foreign countries.

?The first time we used our horses to train Special Forces was right after 9/11,? explains Mark Rossignol, business manager for Smith Lake Stables. Fort Bragg is home to the U.S. Army?s Special Operations Forces. ?They were being sent to Afghanistan, and often the only way they can travel over there is by horse.?

The rocky terrain found in remote areas of Afghanistan isn?t easy to traverse, even by jeep. Native horses become a mode of transportation. Pack animals, especially donkeys, also become familiar partners.

Here is a video of the 1st Calvary riding horses in 2009.

And finally, there is the monument in New York City right next the World Trade Center site dedicated to soldiers who rode into the war in Afghanistan on horses in 2001.

"It was like out of the Old Testament," says Lt. Col. Max Bowers, retired Green Beret, who commanded the three horseback teams.

"You expected Cecil B. DeMille to be filming and Charlton Heston to walk out."

Bowers spoke while sitting in the rural Kentucky studio of sculptor Douwe Blumberg, along with three of his former "horse soldiers."

They, along with 30 fellow commandos on horseback, are the inspiration for a new monument that Blumberg is creating, dedicated to the entire U.S. special operations community.

The statue is scheduled to be erected across from the World Trade Center site in New York on November 11, Veterans Day. The artist rounded up these "horse soldiers" to share their personal stories and mission photos as inspiration for the 18-foot, bronze monument.

"It was unbelievable in 2001," Master Sgt. Bart Decker says to Blumberg.

Decker, the team's Air Force Special Operations combat controller, who is now retired, sports a Fu Manchu-style mustache. "We all looked at each other [and said] 'We're witnessing a cavalry charge!' " he said.

One thing is clear: the use of horses and bayonets is not obsolete as President Obama implied.

In London, Nimble Start-Ups Offer Alternatives to Stodgy Banks

When Hiroki Takeuchi joined McKinsey & Company in 2008, he had a front-row seat to the upheaval in finance.

Andrew Olney | OJO Images | Getty Images

After the collapse of Lehman Brothers, Mr. Takeuchi, a 26-year-old Oxford graduate, worked with some of the world?s biggest banks trying to figure out how to adjust to new regulations and a changed market. Then he quit.

For Mr. Takeuchi, memories of friends building successful start-ups at college outweighed the lucrative rewards offered by the blue-chip consulting firm. He joined forces with two McKinsey consultants, feverishly writing code out of his parents? house on a minimal budget to create his own technology start-up.

The result was GoCardless, a London-based company that allows small businesses to set up monthly payments to suppliers at a fraction of the cost that banks charge. The business has secured $1.5 million in seed capital from a number of well-known investors, including the American early-stage venture capital firm Y Combinator.

?The whole idea of bank payments is broken,? said Mr. Takeuchi at the start-up?s office in a dilapidated building on the outskirts of London?s financial district. ?There?s an opportunity here, and we?re looking to grab it.?

London?s fast-growing start-up scene is trying to disrupt the financial status quo. As consumers? trust in banks deteriorates because of a series of recent scandals, young companies are pressing their newcomer advantage. Firms are offering services like low-cost foreign currency exchange and new ways for small business to borrow cash.

Backed by venture capital firms like Index Ventures, the financial start-ups are taking on entrenched incumbents by using technology to pare back costs and improve the customer experience. Local authorities do not directly regulate many of the firms, but the young companies often use traditional banks and other financial firms for their back-office functions, like processing payments, which are monitored by British regulators.

?Start-ups are taking advantage of London?s position as a global financial center,? said Adam Valkin, a partner at the European venture capital firm Accel Partners. ?They are innovating in ways that banks just can?t do.?

The growth of finance entrepreneurs comes as London?s start-up community continues to flourish. Many parts of East London have transformed into a mini version of Silicon Valley, with the likes of Google opening shared office space to support fledgling companies. Finance, technology and fashion start-ups have been able to tap into the large talent pool of young, multilingual professionals eager to work for the firms.

Many companies are following the lead of Wonga.com, an online lender founded in 2006 that has sought to fill a void left by banks by offering short-term, high-interest loans to consumers and small businesses. The company has been criticized for charging high interest rates to vulnerable consumers. The typical annual percentage rate on the company?s loans is more than 4,000 percent, though Wonga.com says it only offers lending for a maximum of 30 days.

To cut down on costs, the start-up relies on publicly available online data to determine whether an applicant is creditworthy. Loans can take as little as 15 minutes to arrange, and the company has branched out from consumer lending into the small-business market as individuals look for alternatives to banks.

The tactics are paying off. Last year, the online lender reported a 269 percent rise in its net profit, to ?45.8 million, or $73 million, after its loans increased fourfold compared with the previous year. Now, Wonga is now contemplating a multibillion-dollar initial public offering on Nasdaq, profiting from lending to consumers that are perceived as too risky for banks.

For many workers in London?s financial services sector, successes like Wonga have turned the idea of starting a business into an increasingly attractive option. With investment banking activities on the wane, job prospects in the industry have remained poor since the beginning of the financial crisis, and the financial sector here is expected to lose 25,000 jobs this year.

Anil Stocker has seen the layoffs up close.

Mr. Stocker, a 28-year-old Cambridge graduate, left Lehman Brothers a few months before it collapsed in 2008. A year later, he resigned from the American investment bank Cogent Partners to co-found MarketInvoice with two friends who worked at JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs.

The start-up helps small businesses gain access to capital by selling their supplier invoices to investors at a discount.

?The finance industry will have to completely change, and we are just at the beginning,? Mr. Stocker said.

MarketInvoice wants to exploit an underserved market in the banking sector. As firms have pulled back on lending, small business have been denied credit because they are deemed too much of a financial risk.

To help these companies access cash, Mr. Stocker and his partners began an online marketplace where small businesses can auction their long-term supply contracts to money managers for the highest price. Many of these invoices can take up to 90 days to pay out, so companies are willing to sell them at a discount to get hold of short-term capital.

Starting the business has not been easy. It took MarketInvoice?s founders ? who were still working for banks ? almost a year to devise the business plan, and a further six months to raise $1.4 million from investors. The start-up auctioned its first supplier contract for ?40,000, or $64,000, in early 2011, but only hit the ?1 million mark nine months later.

?No one wanted to be the first company to use our system,? Mr. Stocker said. ?At the beginning, you live or die by your reputation.?

London?s finance start-ups also are attracting entrepreneurs with a technology background.

Taavet Hinrikus, a 31-year-old Estonian who was Skype?s first employee, dreamed up his business while still working for the Internet calling service. In 2006, the company moved him to London from Tallinn, Estonia, where he rose to become Skype?s director of strategy. But Mr. Hinrikus grew frustrated after losing 5 percent of his salary to bank charges every time he moved money from Estonia to Britain.

After meeting fellow compatriots in London who wanted to transfer cash back Estonia, Mr. Hinrikus created a system in which individuals could move money to each other?s accounts. By agreeing to swap currencies at a set rate, Mr. Hinrikus said he saved thousands of dollars in bank fees.

?We had to find our own way to avoid the charges,? he said.

With his business partner, Kristo Kaarmann, a former management consultant, Mr. Hinrikus built a Web site that connects people looking to exchange British pounds with euros. Their start-up, called TransferWise, acts as an intermediary for the money transfers and has expanded into other European currencies.

Not everything has gone to plan. The start-up had to wait 18 months to receive its license to operate from British regulators.

Yet in its first 12 months, Mr. Hinrikus said TransferWise has helped people to exchange around $10 million of foreign currencies that has avoided costly bank charges. The start-up also has raised $1.3 million in seed capital from investors, including PayPal?s co-founder Max Levchin.

?Banks aren?t doing a good job at innovating for consumers,? said Robert Dighero, a partner in the London-based venture capital firm Passion Capital. ?Start-ups are nibbling away at some of their most profitable businesses.?

Google launches new, cheaper Samsung Chromebook

Samsung Chromebook

Chromebooks, Google's thin client browser-only laptop experiment, are getting a refresh today with a new cheaper option. The details are a bit sparse at the moment, but the new Chromebook seems to have similar design features as the previous Samsung Series 5 model -- matte grey plastic and understated lines. The difference here is that this device will sell full-priced at $249, a huge drop from the $449 of the previous versions. It's unclear at this point what corners have been cut to bring the price down, but we have to think that Google wouldn't cut it back too much. It is interesting to note that Google offers 100GB of free Google Drive storage for 2 years with purchase of a Chromebook as well.

The new $249 Chromebook goes on pre-order from online retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and PC World starting today. Next week it will officially go on sale from the same retailers, as well as directly from Google via the Play Store.

TweetBot for Mac reaches the Mac App Store, keeps the 3rd-party Twitter client flame alive

Tweetbot for Mac snap-together in alpha

When Twitter put out its strict new API guidelines, there was some doubt as to whether or not third-party clients like Tapbots' Tweetbot for Mac would even make the cut -- the user caps and other curbs on unofficial apps potentially made it tough to develop competition around a different (and possibly better) experience. That makes today's official appearance of Tweetbot in the Mac App Store as much symbolic as it is practical. While there won't be many significant shocks for those who've been participating in Tweetbot's alpha and beta stages, the finished version gives everyone running OS X Mountain Lion a major and sometimes more advanced alternative to official choices, such as TweetDeck, as well as existing third-party options like Twitterrific. A $20 price doesn't make Tweetbot the cheapest way to buck convention by any means, but it might be worth the investment if you're already committed to Tapbots' iOS apps or want to make a statement on the value of third parties in an ecosystem.

Presidential debate 101: In oil drilling spat, did Obama make his best case?

A tense exchange between Romney and Obama on oil drilling was perhaps the most contentious of the second presidential debate. Here's a look at what was said, and whether it was accurate.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer / October 17, 2012

President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speak during the second presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., Tuesday, Oct. 16.

The exchange on energy policy on Tuesday night?s debate was possibly the most contentious area of disagreement.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney tried to get President Obama in a headlock over the number of drilling permits issued to try to find new oil. Mr. Romney kept circling Mr. Obama while he asked six times, ?How much did you cut them (drilling permits) by, then??

Obama blamed the oil industry for sitting on oil leases for decades and said the permits were taken away since they were not being used. But, regardless of the permits, Obama said, oil production is up.

Romney said, oh no, production on federal lands is down.

It would be surprising if anyone watching the debate were not confused.

Who is right? It turns out that there is truth in both statements.

First, there is no doubt that drilling permits fell. According to the Department of the Interior, permits dropped 36 percent in 2011 from the prior year. Romney claimed Obama had cut licenses and permits in half.

But what Obama did not say was that the reason permits dropped ?was the giant BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in April of 2010. After the spill, the Department of the Interior issued a moratorium on new permits until it could review safety procedures and draft tighter anti-pollution regulations. In October 2010 it lifted the moratorium after drafting tougher rules.

?When you have a spill that big you look around and ask, ?Are we doing everything carefully,? ? says Sarah Emerson, managing principal at Energy Security Analysis Inc. in Wakefield, Mass. ?It was careful governance, but it would have an impact on production in the subsequent year.?

Instead, Obama said the industry was sitting on leases for decades. ?So if you want to drill on public lands, you use it or you lose it,? he told Romney.

The government did take away some leases, agrees Amy Myers Jaffe, an energy expert affiliated with the University of California, Davis Graduate School of Management.

But she says Obama?s implication that the energy companies are lazy may be too negative.

?Sometimes it?s more complicated,? she says. For example, she says oil companies have to decide what their priorities are in terms of drilling. Sometimes, the best prospects may be in West Africa or Latin America. ?You have to show management you are better off drilling here than somewhere else,? she says.

Analysts, PC industry cool on Windows 8

9 hrs.

While Microsoft?is touting next week's launch of Windows 8 as the savior of the computer industry, PC makers and analysts are increasingly skeptical that the new operating system will lure consumers away from tablets and smartphones.

Even Intel, which makes the processors at the heart of 80 percent of personal computers, doubts that Windows 8 will have a big impact on sales. CEO Paul Otellini said this week that he's "very excited" about the new operating system but expects the usual holiday bounce in PC sales to be half of what it usually is. Clearly, PC makers are being cautious about building big stocks of Windows 8 PCs.

"We haven't had a chance to really judge how consumers will embrace this in the PC space or not," Otellini said on a conference call with reporters and analysts.

Research firm IHS iSuppli expects the industry to ship 349 million PCs this year, down 1 percent from last year's all-time high. Although small, the decline would be the first since 2001.

In the U.S., a mature market where consumers are gobbling up tablets, PC sales have already been declining for two years.

Meanwhile, Apple has been doubling sales of iPad tablets every year since the first model was introduced in 2010. In the April to June period, Apple shipped 17 million iPads, while Hewlett-Packard, then the world's largest maker of PCs, shipped 13.6 million PCs, according to Gartner analysts.

Smartphones, which were a niche market before the 2007 launch of the iPhone, outsold PCs last year, even though PC sales were at a record high.

The PC market is still big, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the Seattle Times last month, "and Windows 8 will propel that volume."

The software is a response to the popularity of tablets. It tosses out many Windows conventions in favor of a radical new look that's designed to be easy to use on a touch screen. With Windows 8, PC makers are releasing a slew of laptops that double as tablets, either with detachable screens or with screens that fold down over the keyboard.

But Citigroup analyst Joe Yoo is even more pessimistic than Intel that Windows 8 will spur a turnaround in sales of desktop and laptop computers. It could turn out to be a "non-event" in terms of getting people to buy PCs, he said.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Thursday, the company reports results for the quarter that ended in September, and executives will likely talk about prospects for the rest of the year.

Brian White at Topeka Capital Markets said Taiwanese PC component suppliers aren't seeing any pickup in orders ahead of the Oct. 26 launch of Windows 8.

"The sentiment around Windows 8 was overwhelmingly negative," he said after meetings with suppliers. "We believe the PC industry is headed for a muted December quarter and well below the ramp expected with new products."

Analyst Mary Jo Foley at UBS is "leery" of Windows 8, noting that it has an entirely new look and feel. It could either be a big success, she said, or it could confuse customers and turn them off. She noted that Microsoft is set to support the launch with its $1 billion in advertising, the most it has ever spent on a campaign. That support will be critical for overcoming resistance to the new user interface and reinvigorate interest in PCs, she wrote.

PC makers began the year with the hope that a new wave of lightweight laptops called ultrabooks would provide a sales lift. But ultrabooks are still expensive, with most models around $1,000, and they haven't been compelling enough to overcome the growing popularity of smartphones and tablets.

Now, PC makers are in a tough spot when it comes to taking advantage of Windows 8, said Patrick Moorhead, a former chip executive who now runs research firm Moor Insight. Adding a touchscreen into a PC is expensive, and they're competing with tablets that are much cheaper. Meanwhile, Microsoft hasn't made much effort to add new features for mouse-and-keyboard PCs to Windows 8.

"If you're a user, you're asking yourself: 'Why do I need to buy this new notebook, if my old notebook can still do what I need it to do? Instead, I'll buy a new phone or a tablet,'" Moorhead said.?

Lukas Volger Visits HBO!

Lukas Volger

In celebration of Vegetarian Awareness Month, Lukas Volger, author of Veggie Burgers Every Which Way and Vegetarian Entrees That Won?t Leave You Hungry, was invited to HBO?s Times Square headquarters on Tuesday to sign books as five of his delicious recipes were featured on the HBO employee lunch menu. The food caused quite a stir among the lunch-goers, many of whom stopped at Lukas?s table to compliment the dishes and, in some cases, buy his books. The kitchen staff also seemed more than happy to serve Lukas?s food. One of the cooks went home with a copy of Vegetarian Entrees and the head chef announced his plans to make some of the recipes regular staples of his menu.

Founded by the North American Vegetarian Society, Vegetarian Awareness Month?which kicks off on October 1st of each year with World Vegetarian Day and ends on November 1st with World Vegan Day?is intended to raise public awareness around the many health and environmental benefits of a vegetarian diet. The recipes featured on Tuesday?recipes such as Bulgur Salad with Kale and Feta and Black-Eyed Pea Salad with Roasted Squash Radicchio?perfectly demonstrate one of the key points of Vegetarian Awareness Month: that one can enjoy the benefits of a vegetarian diet without sacrificing taste. For proof of this, look no further than the self-professed meat-lovers who went home on Tuesday with Lukas?s books.
