Evolution and the ice age

Feb. 26, 2013 ? Dr John Stewart has made important contributions to a growing body of work that shows how the evolution of ecosystems has to be taken into account when speculating between different geological eras. Go back to the time of the dinosaurs or to the single-celled organisms at the origins of life, and it is obvious that ecosystems existing more than 65 million years ago and around four billion years ago cannot be simply surmised from those of today.

Although the most drastic evolutionary changes occur over long spans of time, the effects can be seen relatively recently, argues Dr Stewart.

Stewart has studied the interaction between ancient ecosystems -- paleoecology -- and evolution of humans and other organisms over the past 100,000 years, undertaking everything from excavating cave sites in Belgium to exploring the desert of Abu Dhabi.

In one milestone collaborative study, Dr Stewart has taken existing knowledge of the geographical spread of plant and animal species throughout the warming and cooling of the Ice Ages to provide insights into human origins, including the evolution and extinction of Neanderthals.

He has also examined the rise of the 'first Europeans', along with the Denisovans -- a newly discovered group -- mysterious cousins of the Neanderthals, who occupied a vast realm stretching from the chill expanse of Siberia to the tropical forests of Indonesia.

The key insight in this work, conducted alongside Prof Chris Stringer of London's Natural History Museum, came from understanding the important role of the refuge taken by a species from harsher conditions -- known as a refugium -- which has a tremendous influence on the evolutionary future of the species. Once the climate changes again, for instance as ice sheets melt, these refuges can expand or connect up again.

But, of course, there's a twist. Evolution has also had a huge influence. The inhabitants are not the same as the original populations as a result of genetic mutations. The time spent apart in refuge generally serves to splinter a once unified species.

Previous research into hedgehogs, polar bears and other animals suggest that, even once an Ice Age ends and the different populations start intermingling again, they never really merge back together as a single group. This process drives important evolutionary changes, which can ultimately lead to the origins of a new species.

Ultimately, this explains why Homo sapiens are still here and our archaic human cousins went extinct some 30,000 years ago: our ancestors chose the right refuge to wait out the Ice Age.

Today, Dr Stewart's work has shifted away from fossil remains to ancient DNA. Traditionally insights into the evolution of species have come from fossils, but we now know that the genetic changes that underlie a major change in body shape can be minor.

"The most exciting development in my field has been the ability to analyse ancient DNA, which has begun to allow us to see evolution happening over the last several dozen thousand years," explains Dr Stewart.

His claim that climate change caused the Neanderthals' demise is supported by work by Love Dal?n at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm, who has looked at the genes in 13 Neanderthal fossils found in southern Europe and western Asia.

All Neanderthal fossils more than 48,000 years old, and those found in Asia, had a higher level of genetic diversity than later European fossils, suggesting that the Neanderthals probably went through an evolutionary 'bottleneck' where a significant percentage of them perished.

When a bottleneck occurs, the remaining individuals are often a much less diverse group, which makes it more difficult for them to evolve and adapt to a changing environment.

Dr Stewart, who is doing DNA studies in collaboration with teams at the Natural History Museum in Stockholm and the Universities of York and Royal Holloway, is now focusing on using genetics to elucidate the evolution of a wide range of creatures.

He has conducted recent studies at the cave site of Trou Al'Wesse, a refugium once occupied by Neanderthals, in Belgium. He is studying how animal populations changed as a result of Ice Age climate change to understand the evolutionary processes that have taken place over the last 50,000 years.

But his work is not confined to the past. It informs the present too. Recently there had been a proposal to eradicate the Eagle Owl because it killed other birds, such as hen harriers, and was not thought to be a native species. But Dr Stewart's studies of fossils and more recent archaeological records revealed the bird, or something like it, has been present in Britain for up to 700,000 years. The plan to cull the birds has now been abandoned.

And his research can help us predict the future. The fear is that our ever-expanding impact on the planet will trigger ecological collapse. But the only way to know for sure is to look back into the past.

"By studying how organisms have reacted to past climate change," explains Dr Stewart, "we can learn lessons about what may take place due to human-caused global warming."

Outpouring of love for coach with a passion for skateboarding

Students from Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences pay their respects for teacher and coach Dan Giguere at a memorial in his honor at school Monday morning, Feb. 11. Giguere was killed in a car crash early Friday morning. A memorial service was held on Saturday at First Baptist Church.

SARASOTA - Skateboards and bikes were piled in the church lobby Saturday during the memorial service to celebrate the life of Dan Giguere.

The seats at First Baptist Church were full during the service, with more people standing in the back of the church balcony. A man much loved by his family and many in the community, Giguere was 35 when he died in a car accident on U.S. 41 last week.

He was a beloved coach at the Sarasota School for Arts and Sciences, where he taught physical education and coached basketball. His impact extended through his outspoken passion for skateboarding, which he used to reach children and promote the well-being of student athletes. He started a skateboard team at the school and a non-profit called Sk8skool, which later took over operation of Sarasota's Payne Skatepark.

His students called him Coach Dan or D-Money.

"He was the money," said his long-time friend, Greg Mulhollen during the service. "He was the money at being a husband and a dad."

Giguere lived in Bradenton with his wife, Alexandra Giguere, and their three young boys: Daniel, 7, Andre, 2 and Jean-Paul, 1.

"I love him very dearly," Alexandra Giguere said. "And yes, he gave everything he had to this family."

With Alexandra and the three boys left without husband and father, friends have stepped in with donations to meet the family's immediate needs and start college funds for the boys.

His mother, Paula Giguere, recalled the times they all spent at the beach and how he loved to play in the sand with his children. While they needed healing, she said they will carry on his name.

"Dan's mantra was 'make it happen,'" his mother said said. "And he did, every day."

The service celebrating Giguere's life included scripture readings and hymns, Bob Marley's "One Love" and the school's 8th grade chorus singing Beyonc?'s "Halo."

A friend and an inspirational role model to many of his students, Giguere was known for his kindness, willingness to make people laugh and skill as an athlete. When a video with pictures of Giguere played during the service, there were giggles in the crowd seeing him dressed as a ninja and goofing around with his friends and family.

"Somehow, I think Dan knew life was too short," said Matthew Blanchard, Giguere's friend since middle school. "I didn't know how he got so much done every day."

When it came time to leave, the family, friends and students walked, rode or skated to Payne Park for a candlelight vigil. Armed with enough glow sticks for everyone, the crowd lit up Main Street as they moved toward the park where Giguere had spent many hours with them.

Facebook says target of sophisticated hacking attack

(Reuters) - Facebook Inc said on Friday that it been the target of a series of attacks by an unidentified hacker group, but it had found no evidence that user data was compromised.

"Last month, Facebook security discovered that our systems had been targeted in a sophisticated attack," the company said in a blog post posted on Friday afternoon, just before the three-day Presidents Day weekend. "The attack occurred when a handful of employees visited a mobile developer website that was compromised."

The social network, which says it has more than one billion active users worldwide, also said: "Facebook was not alone in this attack. It is clear that others were attacked and infiltrated recently as well."

Facebook's announcement follows recent cyber attacks on other prominent websites. Twitter, the microblogging social network, said earlier this month that it had been hacked, and that approximately 250,000 user accounts were potentially compromised, with attackers gaining access to information including user names and email addresses.

Newspaper websites, including those of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal, have said they have also been infiltrated. Those attacks were attributed by the news organizations to Chinese hackers targeting their coverage of China.

While Facebook said that no user data was compromised, the incident could raise consumer concerns about privacy and the vulnerability of personal information stored within the social network.

Facebook has experienced several privacy missteps over the years for the way it handles user data, and settled a privacy investigation with federal regulators in 2011.

Facebook said it spotted a suspicious file and traced it back to an employee's laptop. After conducting a forensic examination of the laptop, Facebook said it identified a malicious file, then searched company-wide and identified "several other compromised employee laptops."

The company also said it identified a previously unseen exploit to bypass its built-in cyberdefenses, and that new protections were added on February 1.

(AP Photo/AP Video)

(AP) ? A small army of workers set to work Saturday to replace the estimated 200,000 square meters (50 acres) of windows shattered by the shock wave from a meteor that exploded over Russia's Chelyabinsk region.

The astonishing Friday morning event blew out windows in more than 4,000 buildings in the region, mostly in the capital city of the same name and injured some 1,200 people, largely with cuts from the flying glass.

Fifteen of the injured remained hospitalized on Saturday, one of them in a coma, the regional health ministry said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Regional governor Mikhail Yurevich on Saturday said damage from the high-altitude explosion ? estimated to have the force of 20 atomic bombs ? is estimated at 1 billion rubles ($33 million). He promised to have all the broken windows replaced within a week.

But that is a long wait in a frigid region. The midday temperature in Chelyabinsk was minus-12 C (10 F), and for many the immediate task was to put up plastic sheeting and boards on shattered residential windows.

More than 24,000 people, including volunteers, have mobilized in the region to cover windows, gather warm clothes and food and make other relief efforts, the regional governor's office said. Crews from glass companies in adjacent regions were being flown in.

In the town of Chebarkul, 80 kilometers (50 miles) west of Chelyabinsk city, divers explored the bottom of an ice-crusted lake looking for meteor fragments believed to have fallen there, leaving a six-meter-wide (20-foot-wide) hole. Emergency Ministry spokeswoman Irina Rossius told Russian news agencies the search hadn't found anything.

Police kept a small crowd of curious onlookers from venturing out onto the icy lake, where a tent was set up for the divers.

Many of them were still trying to process the memories of the strange day they'd lived through.

Valery Fomichov said he had been out for a run when the meteor streaked across the sky shortly after sunrise.

"I glanced up and saw a glowing dot in the west. And it got bigger and bigger, like a soccer ball, until it became blindingly white and I turned away," he said.

In a local church, clergyman Sexton Sergei sought to derive a larger lesson.

"Perhaps God was giving a kind of sign, so that people don't simply think about their own trifles on earth, but rather look to the heavens once in a while."

Putin: NGOs mustn't meddle in Russia's affairs

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned foreign-funded non-government organizations against meddling in the country's affairs.

Putin also angrily lashed out at recent U.S. criticism of the Russian-led post-Soviet alliances.

Speaking at a meeting with top officials of the main KGB successor agency, Putin mentioned what he described as "recent nervous statements about integration processes in the former Soviet lands."

While Putin didn't name any names, he appeared to refer to a statement by former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who said in December, while still in the job, that Russian-led regional alliances represent an attempt to restore the Soviet empire.

Putin has described the existing economic and security groupings of ex-Soviet nations as precursors to a stronger Eurasian Union, which he pledged to form by 2015. He insisted the new alliance would help Russia and its neighbors boost economic efficiency and compete more successfully in global markets.

Putin said Thursday that efforts at closer economic and political integration between Russia and its neighbors "can't be stopped by shouts or calling down." He told officials of the Federal Security Service, known as the FSB, they must be prepared to thwart foreign attempts to derail the integration plans.

"They may use various instruments of pressure, including mechanisms of the so-called 'soft power,'" he said. "The sovereign right of Russia and its partners to build and develop its integration project must be safely protected."

Putin, who won a third presidential term in a vote last March, has taken a tough posture toward Washington, accusing the U.S. State Department of fomenting protests against his rule in order to weaken Russia.

After Putin's inauguration in May, the Kremlin-controlled parliament quickly rubber-stamped a series of repressive laws that sharply hiked fines for taking part in unauthorized protests, extended the definition of high treason and required non-government organizations that receive foreign funding to register as "foreign agents," a term that sounds synonymous to spies in Russian.

Leading Russian NGOs have vowed to ignore the bill, which also allows an unlimited number of inspections and checks that could paralyze the activities of NGOs.

Putin on Thursday strongly defended the bill in language that reflected the Kremlin's view of NGOs as an instrument of Western pressure.

"No one has the monopoly of speaking on behalf of the entire Russian society, let alone the structures directed and funded from abroad and thus inevitably serving foreign interests," he said. "Any direct or indirect meddling in our internal affairs, any forms of pressure on Russia, on our allies and partners is inadmissible."

While Putin avoided direct reference to the U.S., FSB director Alexander Bortnikov said, according to Russian news agencies, that Washington and its allies last year "raised geopolitical pressure on Russia, whom they continue to view as a major rival in the international arena."

Putin said the FSB last year exposed 34 foreign intelligence officers and 181 of their agents. He didn't name the countries they were spying for.

Zombie warning exposes flaws, say experts

The zombie attack alert issued on a handful of U.S. TV stations this week is more serious than a mischievous hacker prank say cyber experts, who warn the incident exposes lax security practices in a critical public safety system.

While broadcasters said poor password security paved the way for the bogus warning, security experts said the equipment used by the Emergency Alert System remained vulnerable when stations allow it be accessed via the public Internet.

The fear is that hackers could prevent the government from sending out public warnings during an emergency or attackers could conduct a more damaging hoax than a warning of a zombie apocalypse.

"It isn't what they said. It is the fact that they got into the system. They could have caused some real damage," said Karole White, president of the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.

James Barnett, a retired U.S. Navy admiral and former chief of public safety and homeland security for the Federal Communications Commission, told NBC News Wednesday that while the zombie prank was not an act of terrorism, the false message, which spread to other states, demonstrated a real risk.

"Somebody hacked in and did a very good job of making it sound real," Barnett said. "The problem was bad computer hygiene. [Admins] didn't change the passwords, so it was easy for someone to break into it."

Following the attacks on Monday, broadcasters were ordered to change the passwords for the EAS equipment.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) would not comment on the attacks, but in an urgent advisory sent to television stations on Tuesday said: "All EAS participants are required to take immediate action."

It instructed them to change passwords on equipment from all manufacturers used to deliver emergency broadcasts. The FCC instructed them to ensure gear was properly secured behind firewalls and to inspect systems to ensure that hackers had not queued "unauthorized alerts" for future transmission.

Vulnerable
The attacks come after warnings by government officials and outside security experts that the United States is at risk of a cyber attack that could cause major physical damage or even cost lives. President Barack Obama told Congress on Tuesday that some hackers were looking for ways to attack the U.S. power grid, banks and air traffic control systems.

White and her counterpart in Montana, Greg MacDonald, said they believed the hackers were able to get in because TV stations had not changed the default passwords they used when the equipment was first shipped from the manufacturer.

But Mike Davis, a hardware security expert with a firm known as IOActive Labs, said hackers could still get past new passwords to remotely access the systems.

Davis said he had submitted a report to the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team, or US-CERT, about a month ago that detailed the security flaws.

"Changing passwords is insufficient to prevent unauthorized remote login. There are still multiple undisclosed authentication bypasses," he told Reuters via email. "I would recommend disconnecting them from the network until a fix is available."

Davis said he was able to use Google Inc's search engine to identify some 30 systems that he believed were vulnerable to attack as of Wednesday morning.

Privately held Monroe Electronics, whose equipment was compromised in Monday's attacks, said it was still evaluating the risks.

"The situation appears to just be the password stuff, but we are looking at anything else and everything that might come into play," Vice President Bill Robertson told Reuters.

A spokesman for US-CERT said he could not immediately comment on the matter.

'Bodies are rising'
The zombie hackers targeted two stations in Michigan, and several in California, Montana and New Mexico, White said.

A male voice addressed viewers in a video posted on the Internet of the bogus warning broadcast from KRTV, a CBS affiliate based in Great Falls, Montana: "Civil authorities in your area have reported that the bodies of the dead are rising from the grave and attacking the living."

The voice warned not "to approach or apprehend these bodies as they are extremely dangerous."

Stuart McClure, chief executive of cyber security firm Cylance Inc, said he had investigated cases in which hackers accessed EAS systems via a different method: breaking into hidden accounts built into the systems by manufacturers so that service technicians can easily access them for repairs.

"You cannot give a separate pass code to everybody. Nobody is going to remember it. You have to share the secret," said McClure, who previously ran a unit at Intel Corp's McAfee security division that investigated cyber attacks.

Electronics industry experts said that it is tough for some broadcasters to follow all security guidelines because staff at small stations lack the expertise to do so.

The equipment that was compromised obtains emergency broadcasts by frequently using the Internet to make outward calls to trusted government servers. When it finds an alert on one of those servers, it broadcasts it on that station.

Monroe Electronics said its gear is designed to let stations make outgoing queries, but still keep outsiders from getting in. It recommends against unsecured access to the Internet. "It's the wild, wild West," said Robertson.

He said the equipment sometimes gets exposed to the open Internet because it is not properly configured or because engineers want remote access when they are on call.

Robertson said the company was working to beef up security on the equipment and might update its software to compel customers to change default passwords.

Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman Dan Watson said that the zombie breach did not have any impact on the government's ability to activate the Emergency Alert System.

(AP) ? The prospect of prison looms over former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife after they agreed to plead guilty to charges in an alleged scheme to spend $750,000 in campaign funds on personal items ? including furs, a gold watch, a football signed by U.S. presidents and even a hat once owned by Michael Jackson.

It wasn't immediately clear how much time either Jackson could end up doing when the legal drama inevitably reaches its climax before a federal sentencing judge within a few months. But judges frown on brazen breeches of public trust, said one former federal prosecutor, and that may mean the former Chicago congressman will likely to have to serve at least a few years behind bars.

"It shows hubris and arrogance that a politician sees his campaign coffers as his to spend as likes," said Jeff Cramer, who as an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago worked on multiple corruption cases. "With these kinds of charges, I cannot imagine him not going to prison ... for 3 1/2 or 4 1/2 years."

He thought Sandi Jackson, at most, would spend several months in prison.

Prosecutors are reluctant to ask judges to send couples with school-age children, like the Jacksons, to prison for long terms at simultaneously ? so it's possible, Cramer said, that the government will seek to stagger their sentences in such a way that the Jacksons aren't behind bars at the same time.

Federal prosecutors on Friday filed one charge of conspiracy against the former congressman and charged his ex-alderman wife, Sandra, with one count of filing false joint federal income tax returns for the years 2006 through 2011 that knowingly understated the income the couple received. Both agreed to plead guilty in deals with federal prosecutors.

Both face maximum penalties of several years in prison; he also faces hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and forfeitures. But the government did not immediately release the text of its plea agreements. Such agreements almost invariably call for prosecutors to recommend sentences below the maximum.

The son of a famed civil rights leader, Jackson, a Democrat, entered Congress in 1995 and resigned last November. Sandi, as she's known, was a Chicago alderman, but resigned last month amid the federal investigation.

Jackson used campaign money to buy a $43,350 gold-plated, men's Rolex watch and $9,587.64 on children's furniture, according to court papers filed in the case. His wife spent $5,150 on fur capes and parkas, the document said.

"I offer no excuses for my conduct, and I fully accept my responsibility for the improper decisions and mistakes I have made," the ex-congressman said in a written statement released by his lawyers. "I want to offer my sincerest apologies ... it is my hope that I am remembered for things that I did right."

Several messages left with Jackson's father, the voluble civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, were not returned Friday. The elder Jackson has often declined to comment about his son's health and legal woes over the past several months.

The government said, "Defendant Jesse L. Jackson Jr., willingly and knowingly, used approximately $750,000 from the campaign's accounts for personal expenses" that benefited him and his co-conspirator, who was not named in the one-count criminal information filed in the case. The filing of a criminal information means a defendant has waived the right to have a grand jury consider the case; it is used by federal prosecutors when they have reached a deal for a guilty plea.

The prosecutors' court filing said that upon conviction, Jackson must forfeit $750,000, plus tens of thousands of dollars' worth of memorabilia items and furs. The memorabilia includes a football signed by U.S. presidents, a Michael Jackson and Eddie Van Halen guitar, a Michael Jackson fedora, Martin Luther King Jr. memorabilia, Malcolm X memorabilia, Jimi Hendrix memorabilia and Bruce Lee memorabilia ? all from a company called Antiquities of Nevada.

The conspiracy charge carries a maximum statutory penalty of up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and other penalties. U.S. District Judge Robert L. Wilkins is assigned to the case.

Tom Kirsch, an attorney for Jackson's wife said she has signed a plea agreement with federal prosecutors and would plead guilty to one tax count.

Kirsch said his client and her husband have supported each other. He said the ordeal has been stressful for Sandi Jackson, but she "expected to be held responsible ... and wants to put (it) behind her and her family."

The charge against Sandi Jackson carries a maximum of three-year prison sentence. But Kirsch says the agreement "does not contemplate a sentence of that length."

The court papers said that Jackson filed false financial reports with the U.S. House of Representatives in an attempt to conceal his and his wife's conversion of campaign funds for their personal benefit.

A black and red cashmere cape cost $1,500, a mink reversible parka cost $1,200 and a black fox reversible cost $1,500, prosecutors wrote.

Jackson's resignation ended a once-promising political career tarnished by unproven allegations that he was involved in discussions to raise campaign funds for imprisoned former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich in exchange for appointment ? which never came ? to President Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat. The House Ethics Committee, which no longer has any power over Jackson, may choose to issue a report on the matter.

Jackson denied any wrongdoing in the Blagojevich matter. But the suspicions, along with revelations that he had had an extramarital affair, derailed any aspirations for higher political office. It wasn't clear from the court papers whether the woman with whom he had the affair was among the half dozen people identified the documents by letters of the alphabet rather than by their names.

Since last June, Jackson has been hospitalized twice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for treatment of bipolar disorder and other issues, and he stayed out of the public eye for months, even during the November elections.

The Introvert?s Introvert

After leaving her corporate law practice, Susan Cain decided to write a book exploring how people like her?introverts with a lot to offer?were being left by the sidelines in a world increasingly geared toward extroverts. Apparently she hit a nerve. The 2012 book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, has been a huge best-seller. In a recent talk recorded at 6th and I Historic Synagogue in Washington, D.C., Cain and her old friend and law school classmate Angie Kim discuss how businesses and schools are beginning to absorb the lessons of the book?and how Cain and Kim, an avowed extrovert, experienced their law school days very differently.

Does 'I love you' mean your relationship is in trouble?

Feb. 14, 2013 ? Cuddling, kissing and holding hands are the kinds of behavior you might expect to see this time of year. So why do the days that follow Valentine's Day mark the largest spike on the calendar for breakups?

Affectionate behavior is not all that it seems, according to relational communication expert Sean Horan, an assistant professor at DePaul University in the College of Communication.

"Gestures such as hand holding, kissing and cuddling could be indicators that your partner is mad at you," explained Horan.

In the study "Understanding the Routine Expression of Deceptive Affection in Romantic Relationships," forthcoming in Communication Quarterly, co-author Horan examined how and why deceptive affectionate behavior occurs.

Deceptive affection means that an individual in a romantic relationship chooses to express affection he or she does not actually feel, according to the findings.

Horan, along with co-author Melanie Booth-Butterfield, a professor at West Virginia University, discovered that non-married individuals expressed deceptive affection about three times a week to romantic partners.

"Couples use deceptive affection because they feel negatively about their partner and want to save face, avoid embarrassing their partner or sidestep a situation that may land them in hot water," said Horan.

Examples of this kind of deception include lying about one's own feelings or feelings about a partner and expressing affection instead of negative feelings, he noted.

One participant confessed she didn't want to hug or cuddle her boyfriend because she was in a bad mood but did so anyway. Another told his girlfriend he loved her to get off the phone faster so he could watch a basketball game. And when one woman's boyfriend asked if she liked his new haircut, she lied and said she did, in order to spare his feelings.

According to the study's findings, couples use verbal and non-verbal affection in hopes that a sweet caress or profession of love will mask their true feelings.

However, don't let paranoia kick in and assume your love will wilt faster than Valentine's Day roses. Horan noted that this isn't necessarily negative behavior.

"Using affection to lie appears to be a regular activity in romantic relationships that most people don't seem to mind," he said. "In fact, deceptive affection might actually help maintain a relationship."

iLectric Piano ? tinkle the ivories on your iPad

ilectric piano

If the iPad?s GarageBand app isn?t doing it for you on the piano front, iLectric Piano might be the ideal upgrade.

Billed as ?studio-quality? by makers IK Multimedia, it features over 40 electric piano sounds, including recreations of classic Rhodes and Wurlitzer keyboards that apparently nail them all the way down to their signature nuances.

The notes for every instrument were sampled at multiple velocities, so you can rig up a MIDI keyboard and in theory it?ll be as close to playing the real thing as dammit is to swearing. But you can of course tinkle the ivories on the iPad touchscreen too.

The app also includes a truckload of effects and a fully-featured recorder with overdub, so it?s quite the package on paper. You can buy it here for ?13.99.

UAW planning rally at non-union Salem Ventra plant

SALEM - United Auto Workers from surrounding locals are expected to rally at the Salem Ventra plant at 2 p.m. today as part of a national day of action against Flex-N-Gate Corp., Ventra's owner.

"It's a rally in support of the workers of Ventra," said UAW organizer Mike Gearhart on Tuesday.

The plant is located on Pennsylvania Avenue.

A UAW press release says members and non-members will "rally for justice" at the plant while simultaneous rallies at seven plants in five other states operated by Flex-N-Gate are scheduled.

The company is a $3 billion global parts supplier to the automakers, including Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.

The company says it's the 14th-largest North American automotive supplier and makes interior components for the GM Lordstown plant where the Chevrolet Cruze is assembled.

Flex-N-Gate employs more than 16,000 people at 52 manufacturing and nine product development and engineering facilities in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil and Spain.

Its products include interior and exterior plastics, lighting systems, mechanical assemblies, metal structural body components, and exterior metal parts.

UAW spokesperson Christine Moroski said Tuesday that of the 40 plants in the U.S. and Canada 25 are unionized.

Asked to respond for this story, the company said, "Flex-N-Gate associates receive competitive wages, enjoy quality growth opportunities and benefit from our ongoing commitment to safe working conditions.

"The vast majority of Flex-N-Gate associates are happy with their employment."

The UAW says many Salem plant employees have worked there for 10 to 20 years and "still only earn around $10 an hour."

"Workers want to organize in order to improve pay and working conditions, and to work with the company to make it more successful," Moroski said adding the rally is to inform the public.

"Traditional views of jobs in the auto are good but the auto parts sector pays poverty-level wages," she said.

"Many employees are on food stamps. This is a highly profitable company and can afford to pay higher wages."

She added, "Certainly we don't think $10 is a living wage."

With healthcare costs around $200 a month, she said many can't afford it and live without it.

The demonstrations are aimed at shining a light on the company's treatment of workers at its non-union facilities and to show support for workers bargaining new contracts, the UAW said, adding it represents workers at six facilities owned by Flex-N-Gate.

Workers at several plants in Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Texas, have been illegally fired or disciplined for attempting to form a union, according to the National Labor Relations Board, the UAW said.

The Ventra plant employs approximately 450 hourly people and about half are women, Gearhart said adding there are issues regarding respect, treatment of workers, favoritism, wage and raise disparities and safety concerns.

There is "no structured way" these are handled, he said.

"Workers just want a voice in the things that matter to them and to make the company better in Salem," he said.

He expects support from nearby UAW locals and other unions that will assemble off the company property on Pennsylvania Avenue.

UAW members at Flex-N-Gate union plants in Warren, Mich., and Belvidere, Ill., are currently trying to bargain new contracts.

At both facilities workers voted overwhelmingly to strike if necessary to achieve a fair contract, the UAW said.

Flex-N-Gate owner, Shahid Khan, owns the NFL Jacksonville Jaguars.

Mailbox app is already full with wanna-be users

It?s a sign of how dissatisfied people are with their smartphone?s email client that people are queuing up in large numbers to try a new mail app. At the time of writing, there were nearly 800,000 people waiting for a chance to try Mailbox, a new Gmail client for iOS.

Mailbox is a simple, free email app created by Orchestra, and it?s getting rave reviews. It?s faster than the Gmail app, and cleaner looking than Apple Mail, but what makes Mailbox noteworthy is its use of Gmail?s label and archiving functions. In fact, if you use Gmail without archiving, all the hype around Mailbox might seem unnecessary.

Mailbox is all about getting to ?Inbox Zero? ? a method of organizing your email in such a way that you are extremely productive and fast in how you address tasks, requests and projects. It uses simple gestures to quickly sort your mail into archive, or to save it for later. If you?ve ever wanted to be a power-user, Mailbox is for you.

On the other hand, if you don?t archive, or if you already have good habits about labeling and sorting, the hype around Mailbox might be blown out of proportion.

Either way, that long queue of would-be users is drawing a lot of attention.

Defensive driving and you.

We are all told that defensive driving prevents accidents and that it saves petrol. Out of personal experience I believe that is just a simple lie. If you want to save gas then drive in the highest gear possible and "sail" down hills by pressing the clutch and letting the car roll. Defensive driving also poses big problems since many of the defensive drivers are overcautious drivers and often not good drivers as they pose as obstacles, might be so focused that they overlook something and pull out right in front of another car causing an accident.

I would say to prevent accidents:

-If your fear overcomes you while driving, you better not be driving.
-Use your blinker, it can be helpful to others.
-Do not drive under the influence of alcohol or strong medication.
-Do not drive while tired (driving slow will only make the situation worse).
-Avoid being slow, you should drive 30 in the 50 zone.
-If you see a queue of cars behind you, it is better to pull over to let them by.
-Do not drive a car you are uncomfortable with or that doesnt let you have overview of the road.
-Do not slow down a kilometer before your exit when you arent on a multilane road.

Follow these and you could prevent accidents, road rage and stress.

(AP) ? Lady Gaga says she's "heartsick" to postpone four shows after sustaining an injury that's left her unable to walk.

A Tuesday news release says performances set for Feb. 13-14 in Chicago, Feb. 16 in Detroit and Feb. 17 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, have been postponed due to a case of synovitis, a severe joint inflammation.

Gaga took to Twitter to explain, saying she injured herself during a performance some time ago and her condition has worsened, leaving her immobile following Monday's concert in Montreal. She's been hiding the injury from her staff, but can no longer perform.

"I've been hiding a show injury and chronic pain for sometime now, over the last month it has worsened," she wrote. "I've been praying it would heal".

The remainder of the "Born This Way Ball" tour is expected to continue on schedule, beginning with a two-night stand in Philadelphia on Feb. 19-20. Makeup dates for the missed shows will be announced later.

Invisible tool enables new quantum experiments

Feb. 11, 2013 ? Experiments on the quantum wave nature of atoms and molecules have enabled researchers to precisely measure tiny forces and displacements as well as to shed light onto the unexplored zone between the microscopic realm of quantum physics and our everyday world. Physicists working with Philipp Haslinger and Markus Arndt at the University of Vienna have now succeeded in constructing a novel matter wave interferometer which enables new quantum studies with a broad class of particles, including atoms, molecules and nanoparticles. These lumps of matter are exposed to three pulsed laser light gratings which are invisible to the human eye, exist only for a billionth of a second and never simultaneously.

The new results are reported in the advanced online issue of Nature Physics.

Matter wave interferometry has a long standing tradition at the University of Vienna, where the first quantum interference of large molecules has already been observed in 1999. Now scientists are hunting down evidence for the quantum mechanical behavior of increasingly complex constituents of matter. This is done in experiments in which the flying of each particle seems to obtain information about distinct places in space, which are inaccessible according to classical physics.

Synchronised laser flashes for quantum interferometry

The quantum nanophysics team working with Markus Arndt of the University of Vienna has now established a novel way of manipulating massive particles: the researchers use nanosecond long flashes of laser light to create gratings, three of which form a closed-path interferometer. This scheme allows creating quantum mechanical superposition states, which we do not observe in our macroscopic environment. When precisely synchronized, the fleeting light structures form a device freed from many constraints that limited the measurement precision in earlier machines. "Interferometry in the time-domain with pulsed light gratings will become a central element of quantum experiments with nanoparticles" states Philipp Haslinger who is the first author of the paper.

Viennese prototype with powerful universality

Five students from the University of Vienna have been planning and setting up the device over the past years. The developed prototype is one of a kind: for the first time it allows to investigate the quantum wave nature not only of single molecules, but also of clusters of molecules. During an experiment these particles line up for few nanoseconds in a periodic nanopattern. This structure may serve as a "nanoruler" which enables the detection of tiny external perturbations as well as the precise measurement of small forces and fields.

This project has been supported within the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the Austrian Ministry of Science (BMWF). The experiments were performed within the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology, VCQ, at the Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna.

Are these the first spy shots of the iPhone 5S?!?!?!?!?!

No. God no. And neither are those KIRF pictures floated around the web today for the Times of India. If Apple follows their previous S-series pattern, iPhone 5S cases wouldn't be high order news anyway. At best, they'd be just another small signpost on the long road towards Apple's next release.

Big news would a re-designed casing, or a casing for a new device, reported by at least semi-reliable sources, and passing normal tests of reason, logic, and sanity.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled, non-Archer-verse Apple coverage...
