UK at risk of longer slump as euro crisis hits factories

LONDON (Reuters) - British manufacturing output barely grew at all in April as an economic slowdown in the euro zone curbed demand for goods made in Britain, a survey showed on Tuesday, raising the risk of a longer recession.

The unexpectedly sharp slowdown is fuelling a debate over the chances of further monetary stimulus from the Bank of England (BoE), after central bankers hinted that they might not extend their asset purchases later this month following a run of stronger economic data and sticky inflation.

Sterling fell against the dollar and euro after the PMI release.

The weak Markit/CIPS Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) also cranks up the heat on the governing Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, grappling with a shrinking economy and a series of political blunders as they go into local elections on Thursday, a test of popular support.

The manufacturing PMI dropped to 50.5 in April from a downwardly revised 51.9 in March, keeping the sector just above the 50 level which separates growth from contraction.

"It's all apiece with recent data, which tells us that the economy is weak and likely to remain so for some time," said Peter Dixon, economist at Commerzbank.

The reading, the lowest since December, fell short of economists' forecasts for a dip to 51.5 and lent some credence to disputed official data that showed an economic contraction in Britain in early 2012, tipping the country back into recession.

The Bank and many economists have argued that the official figures understate the economy's true strength, pointing to more upbeat evidence from surveys, including earlier PMIs.

In other quarters the mood is more sombre. The chief executive of British bank Lloyds warned on Tuesday of a "long and difficult" path to economic recovery in Britain.

"We think that the economy will be reasonably flat this year, but it is going to be a long and difficult recovery," Antonio Horta-Osorio said. "We expect it to recover to growth in 2013 and expect unemployment to peak at close to 9 percent by early next year."

The weakness in manufacturing was replicated in Britain's small neighbour Ireland, where growth in the sector almost ground to a halt in March as output fell.

Economic fortunes were better further afield, with China's official PMI rising to a 13-month high in April, signalling that economy has found its footing and may be recovering from a first-quarter trough.

DEPRESSION

Britain's economy has not fully recovered from the steep slump caused by the 2007-2009 financial crisis and is stuck in what some economist already describe as a depression.

British manufacturing output did expand for the fifth consecutive month in April, but it was at the weakest pace since December, partly due to the sharpest fall in new export orders since May 2009, Markit said.

The index measuring overall new orders dropped for the first time since November, with manufacturers blaming sluggish overseas demand and strong competition.

And a strengthening in sterling to its highest in more than two and a half years on a trade-weighted basis poses another threat to exporters by either sapping foreign demand for British wares or squeezing firms' profits via lower prices.

Production of consumer goods fell, while output of intermediate goods, such as car engine, and investment goods, such as factory equipment, both rose.

"It seems that weaknesses in our major trading partner, the euro zone, are starting to hit home, especially for consumer goods producers," said Rob Dobson, senior economist at Markit, which compiles the PMI survey.

Factory-gate price inflation reached a seven-month high, even though manufacturers' costs rose at a much slower pace than in March.

The signs of slower growth but higher output prices will compound the central bank's dilemma over quantitative easing.

Most economists do not expect another round of QE after the current one runs out this week, although the surprise fall in GDP has raised the prospect of the bond-buying being extended.

Does BlackBerry 10's camera app get by with a little help from Scalado Rewind?

Impressed by the new camera tech on display in BB10? You're not alone. But did the folks at RIM have some help with the new "timeline lens" feature? Well, grab your salt shaker. If you recall, software that allows you to change the faces of those pictured via additional pre- and post-shot frames popped up in Scalado's Rewind last year. The ring UI that allows the user to navigate the extra frames from its border is quite similar to the functionality of BB10's editing feature. We've reached out to Scalado for further details on the matter and we're eager to hear its response. But until that happens, hit the video just past the break for a closer look at Rewind in action.

UFO Spotted Near the Sun By NASA ... or Totally Not

An image from NASA's Solar and Heliospheric Observatory has renewed fascination over UFOs after capturing what appears to be an image of something large and artificially constructed hovering close to our solar neighbor.

See below. The NASA video shows something that looks like a huge, sectioned object with some sort of lengthy attached mechanical arm near the sun:

As the NASA video spreads around the Internet, UFO believers are claiming the object is an alien spaceship. Of course, that's probably very unlikely.

Any spaceship getting that close to the sun, with temperatures nearing 10,000 degrees, would surely burn up right then and there ... or would it?

IF the aliens were equipped with a technology we don't have yet, and could withstand enormous heat, they could pull it off though. Think about it.

Need Expert Financial Advice? Read Our Tips! - Credit Deal

Stop charging a credit card that you have issues paying off. Avoid charging things to your credit card by finding another way to pay for your expenses. Pay off your credit card, and then pay it off in full each month if you start using it again.

Make it a habit to review your credit report often. You may obtain a copy of your credit report without cost. Check your credit report twice every year to check for any changes that you did not authorize. Also look to see if any identity theft has been committed against you.

Consider getting a savings account to put money aside every month. The savings money should only be used for emergencies, college costs or major expenses, like a down payment on a house. Even if it?s impossible to make a significant contribution each time, save as much as you can because every little bit helps.

From every check, take out savings first. If you try to save the money after the month has gone by, you will find that you do not have any money left. Once the money is put in a separate account, it reduces the temptation to spend, since you?ve compartmentalized it in a way that makes it psychologically ?less available.?

Get your finances back on track by creating and sticking to a budget. Regardless of your preferred method of accounting, creating and sticking to a budget can help you to identify your financial strengths and weaknesses. Once you know what you?re spending money on, you can decide whether you want to cut any of it out. This type of planning helps you reduce spending and refrain from spending money you can?t afford on luxuries.

It is important that you establish some structure to ensure the security of your financial future. With a goal in mind and a plan for reaching it, you have a yardstick to use in evaluating potential expenses and a source of motivation to work harder.

It can be very helpful to have an emergency savings account. Save for some goal that you want to achieve, such as paying off a debt or saving up enough money to go to college.

Flexible spending accounts can be used for a variety of expenses. If you have medical bills or daycare bills a flexible account can help save you money. These kind of accounts will let you set some pretax money aside for these expenses. There are conditions involved though, so speak to a tax professional.

Managing your money is extremely important. Protect anything you make, and invest any capital you have to spare. Letting profits build up in anticipation of later, larger expenditures is alright, but you must keep in mind that liquid assets cost you in terms of investment opportunities passed up. Make sure you have a barrier set to determine what you shall call profit and what will be capital.

Talking to a good friend or family member that has worked in the financial services industry can be a good source of free information on how to better manage your finances. If there aren?t any family members that have finance experience, close friends are also a good choice to turn to.

Do not dwell on your financial mistakes; learn from them instead. Spending years recovering from credit card debt can be a learning experience to discourage further credit card use. If you have been making less that what you deserve, use that as an incentive to try and get more money from your next job. When dealing with your money situation, learn as much as you can. By learning from your mistakes, your financial status will improve to a better place than before.

It?s important for everyone to have money in a savings that is available at all times. Although interest rates are relatively low on straight savings accounts, it is still important to search around for the highest interest rate on a savings account that you can find. Some of the banks are online, and they are all FDIC insured.

Some forms of debt are infinitely better than others. Real estate investments are examples of good debts. Interest on real estate loans for residential or commercial properties are tax deductible and usually the property will increase in value over time. College debt is also generally considered to be ?good? debt. Student loans generally have lower interest rates are are not repaid back until students have completed their schooling.

Social Entrepreneurship and The Rise of Integration into Local ...

social entrepreneurship 300x224 Social Entrepreneurship and The Rise of Integration into Local CommunitiesSocial Entrepreneurship is working its way into more and more local communities within the US.?Spokane, Washington is one of a growing number of communities taking part in a changing global model of how non-profits do business. For those who are not familiar, social entrepreneurship is the business model is based on creating sustainable, profitable companies that are then used to create social change. Two traditional examples of social entrepreneurship in action in the United States are the Salvation Army and Goodwill Industries. Both provide jobs and training, integrate within their communities, and are sustainable, taking more than 50% of their revenue from local patrons.

In tough economic times, other non-profits that normally fund most of their work through contributions from donors are seeing that funding dry up. Additionally, they are seeing a drop in volunteer numbers. No longer able to rely on the prior way of doing business, smaller non-profit organizations are looking past the old models and trying to view social impact through the lens of the entrepreneur.

For example, the Christ Kitchen started with taking donations to help impoverished women get back on their feet. They quickly learned they needed to focus on putting these women to work and created three businesses towards that end, including a restaurant, a catering company, and a pre-packaged soup and dessert mix company. Each employs local women and provides them with steady income. The collaborative nature of the businesses allows women who have been the victims of violence, homelessness, and addiction to learn actionable skills and enjoy gainful employment in a safe and mutually supportive environment.

Cup of Cool Water focuses on at-risk teens. Shortly after they began, they added a for-profit bike shop in 2007. Here, teens can serve as apprentices and learn to service and repair bicycles, prepping them for work outside in the community and laying the groundwork for them to work in other shops the company hopes to open in the future.

This idea of having for-profit divisions of non-profits serves the central community message and turns the concept of generating money for private value towards generating money for the larger social good. Revenues generate support for salaries, social programs, and awareness campaigns. These companies also create bridge industries for underserved populations, providing invaluable skills training as a stepping-stone to conventional employment. Ultimately, it gives these new non-profits a platform of stability and self-sufficiency in a tumultuous economy.

The longstanding edge of the entrepreneur is that they are able to see opportunities in every situation and have a unique way of turning problems into solutions. That innovation is a quality that has stagnated in older non-profits, who have primarily courted big-fish donors and have not been pushed by adversity to embrace smaller, more nimble money-making opportunities. The ability to collaborate and diversify sources of income generation gives more chances to accomplish noble goals.

Being able to operate with the same business savvy and creative strategy as the for-profit sector is leading to smaller, smarter organization who can direct their own course, interact and partner with each other, while remaining united under the larger altruistic banner of community service.

Is there a change you want to see in your own community? Are there ways of looking at the problem through an entrepreneurial lens? What creative ways can you think of to generate funding for change? How can you use this model to impact your city or town?

Got something in mind? Our Revolution week and the launch of How to Create a Revolution starts on Thursday . Make it happen and tell us about it. We can all be social entrepreneurs if we just put our heads together. Good luck!
