5 killed in Oregon tour bus crash on I-84

LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) ? A tour bus crash crashed Sunday on an icy stretch of interstate in Oregon, killing five people and injuring about 20 others, authorities said.

Police say the bus lost control around 10:30 a.m. on the snow- and ice-covered lanes of Interstate 84 in eastern Oregon. The bus crashed through a guardrail and went down an embankment a few hundred feet.

Rescue workers were using ropes to help retrieve people from the crash scene. State police said the charter bus was carrying about 40 people, but they did not say where the vehicle was traveling to or from.

The bus crash was the second fatal accident in Oregon on Sunday morning due to icy conditions. A 69-year-old man died in a rollover accident

State police have not released information on the company that owns the bus.

Dos Santos vs Velasquez 2: 4 Legitimate Contenders for the Heavyweight Title

Honestly, it's surprising that?Nogueira has held on to his "Top 10" status for so long.

Despite over 13 years on the MMA circuit, the Pride FC legend has yet to suffer back-to-back losses and is slated to face Fabricio Werdum as an opposing coach in a second season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil?next year.

Should they match up after that, UFC president Dana White says that Werdum is looking at a title shot.

That makes sense, and if Overeem happens to win the belt, that's an easy setup for a rematch to wash away the taste of their lackluster fight in Strikeforce.

Then again, Big Nog could be a spanner in the works.

In all fairness, the always-dangerous Nogueira should realistically be getting a similar incentive from the UFC, even if Cain Velasquez is still the champion by then?and Big Nog would likely relish the chance at a rematch to avenge his knockout loss.

Sam Sykes ? Love + War

Love + War

I don?t like the word ?relationship.?

No one does.

For one, it?s a long and soft word, full of hissing and seething noises, so it?s naturally unpleasant to hear. ?We like our soft words to be short, the better to convey the impact of their message, like ?love.? ?And we like our long words to have hard sounds in them so that they seem to have a foundation when they start to wobble under the weight of their syllables, like ?conflict.?

But the real reason we don?t like the word ?relationship? is that it?s too weak to convey the dire severity of its meaning. ?We have a warped definition of the word, one that conjures up images of Zach Braff agonizing through internal dialogue in a hospital cafeteria or an entire genre of books based around women standing around, waiting to see which werewolf or vampire will be the one to take her home.

I once received a review that bemoaned the sheer amount of ?relationship stuff? in?Black Halo. ?It was distinctly critical of how much time was spent getting the characters to know each other better and what they were doing as despair set in. ?His praise finally picked up when Lenk charged heedlessly onto a boat to save Kataria and kill people, which is when he said something along the lines of ?this is what it?s all about. ?Not relationships, but adventure and fighting.?

I kind of sighed.

Not that I blamed him. ?I don?t blame any critic for their views. ?But even if I did, I wouldn?t have blamed him for operating under a weird (if widespread) definition of the word ?relationship.?

We are raised with the belief that ?relationship? is a word that means ?solution.? ?You are not a normal person until you have a long-term relationship, according to the media. ?You are not a well-adjusted human being unless you have a good relationship with your family. ?You are incomplete until you can sit down, watch a shitty sitcom and get the ?jokes? that revolve around a woman wanting a man to buy tampons and him wanting to watch football instead. ?And if you are not normal, well-adjusted or complete, then you surely will be once you get a relationship, because that?s what normal people do.

And likewise, we are raised with the belief that ?conflict? is a word that means ?problem.? ?Conflicts are things that do not occur naturally. ?Conflicts happen because someone screwed up. ?Conflicts are problems to be solved. ?We define our stories with words like ?Man vs. Self,? ?Man vs. Man,? ?Man vs. Manatee? and the like with the implication that they will be overcome.

Conflicts are what define our stories.

But ?conflict? and ?relationship? mean the same thing.

The reason we don?t like the word ?relationship? is because society?s definition of it as ?solution? does not actually fit with what a relationship is. ?And what a relationship is is adversarial in nature. ?It is there to change the status quo, to push people toward each other or away from each other, to disrupt what is comfortable and create something different.

And that?s painful. ?Sometimes exceedingly so.

Because, win or lose, we don?t get to walk away from relationships unchanged. ?We can underplay violence pretty well in society and especially in fantasy literature. ?We throw in fight scenes with the expectation that victory for our heroes means the return of the status quo. ?The dragon is dead, so everything can go back to normal. ?We haven?t yet figured out a way to do this with relationships.

Nor should we.

Every story is about relationships. ?Every boat, sword, laser, ghost, dragon, demon or zeppelin is just a means of pushing that relationship forward.

And I don?t think I really understood this when I started writing.

I think, when I began with?Tome of the Undergates,?I viewed battles and relationships as separate entities. ?We had our fight scenes, then we had our talk scenes, then we had our fight scenes and then talking. ?It was easily staggered and people could skip parts they didn?t like. ?That?s not good writing.

In?Black Halo,?I think I stumbled around the truth a little. ?I knew that fight scenes were just dialogue with fists, that there should never be a fight scene that didn?t change the conversation in some direction. ?I knew that relationships were what broke people, not blood or swords. ?I knew that a woman turning her back on you was worse than a knife embedded in your shoulder. ?But I didn?t know how to express that.

It got better in?The Skybound Sea.

But I think it?s only at my current project that I understand how to make ?relationship? mean ?conflict? mean ?problem and solution.? ?I only now understand what it means to make two people love and hate each other at the same time. ?I only now understand what it means when battle is an extension of love, when swords are long kisses and blood drops are notes in a love song.

Love. ?Hate. ?Relationship. ?Conflict.

They all basically means the same thing: change. ?Change is scary. ?But meaningful.

?Relationships? as we know them by the society?s definition are not meaningful. ?Society tells us that a relationship is a comfort, a normalcy, a solution.

Were that true, we would never feel our hearts beat faster when someone took a step closer to us, we would never listen to the radio and wonder what they were talking about when they played a love song from fifty years ago, we would never lie awake at night wondering how long we could go on being alone.

?Conflicts? as we know them by society?s definition are not meaningful. ?Society tells us that a conflict is a burden, an error, a problem.

Were that true, we would never spend our time consumed with thoughts as to how to punish those who have wronged us, we would never devote more energy to defining ourselves by what we want not to be than we do about what we?do?want to be, we would never look at an enemy and realize we were still alone.

But society is wrong. ?Literature is right.

Relationships are everything. ?Conflict is everything. ?Comfort means nothing. ?Change means everything.

We just need better words for them.

Lyon in contention for Perth Test, says Clarke ? Cricket News ...

Lyon in contention for Perth Test, says Clarke ? Cricket News Update

The Australian Captain, Michael Clarke, disclosed that the spinner, Nathan Lyon is still in contention for the final encounter at Perth against South Africa, coming Friday.

After much speculation that Australia are likely to go to Perth having 4 fast bowlers in the line up like their last year?s appearance at WACA against India, skipper Clarke said, ?He's (Lyon) still a chance, that's for sure, the wicket looks pretty good and I always like having a spinner in the team. Over a five-day period spin will play a part. It does at the Gabba and the WACA. But we need to work out what our best attack is to take 20 wickets. If we think Nathan is part of that, then we go with Nathan. If not, we have the option of going with four fast bowlers.?

After James Pattinson injured himself during the Adelaide Test, and Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle fully fatigued after their extreme effort towards the end of the game, Australia will enter Perth with a completely new set of bowlers.

Mitchell Johnson is on top of the new bowlers' list in the side after his successful record at WACA and his current form in the domestic season. Mitchell Starc is also likely for the game after he succeeded in impressing the selectors, courtesy a good show in the Sheffield Shield matches.

Josh Hazlewood and John Hastings are also included in the 12-man squad for the match. Both fast bowlers, making a good name for themselves in the domestic arena, have yet to play the first International Test match.

If Lyon is retained by the Australian side, then Hazlewood and Hastings will battle it out for the only slot remaining in the line-up.

With veteran batsman Ricky Ponting announcing his retirement after the Perth Test, the game is expected to be full of emotions for the Australians. However, Clarke feels it will give them more motivation to win the game and pay their respect to the legendary batsman by achieving the top slot in the Test rankings.

??I think it will only give us more inspiration, there's no doubt about it,? Clarke said while talking about Ponting?s retirement call.

Poor reading skills tied to risk of teen pregnancy

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Seventh grade girls who have trouble reading are more likely to get pregnant in high school than average or above-average readers, according to a new study from Philadelphia.

Researchers found that pattern stuck even after they took into account the girls' race and poverty in their neighborhoods - both of which are tied to teen pregnancy rates.

"We certainly know that social disadvantages definitely play a part in teen pregnancy risk, and certainly poor educational achievement is one of those factors," said Dr. Krishna Upadhya, a reproductive health and teen pregnancy researcher from Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore.

Poor academic skills may play into how teens see their future economic opportunities and influence the risks they take - even if those aren't conscious decisions, explained Upadhya, who wasn't involved in the new research.

Dr. Ian Bennett from the University of Pennsylvania and his colleagues looked up standardized test reading scores for 12,339 seventh grade girls from 92 different Philadelphia public schools and tracked them over the next six years.

During that period, 1,616 of the teenagers had a baby, including 201 that gave birth two or three times.

Hispanic and African American girls were more likely than white girls to get pregnant. But education appeared to play a role, as well.

Among girls who scored below average on their reading tests, 21 percent went on to have a baby as a teenager. That compared to 12 percent who had average scores and five percent of girls who scored above average on the standardized tests.

Once race and poverty were taken into consideration, girls with below-average reading skills were two and a half times more likely to have a baby than average-scoring girls, according to findings published in the journal Contraception.

Birth rates among girls ages 15 through 19 were at a record low in the U.S. in 2011 at 31 births for every 1,000 girls, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But that rate is still much higher in minority and poorer girls than in white, well-off ones, researchers noted.

And in general, it's significantly higher than teen birth rates in other wealthy nations.

Teen pregnancies are a concern because young moms and their babies have more health problems and pregnancy-related complications, and girls who get pregnant are at higher risk of dropping out of school.

Upadhya said the answer to preventing teen pregnancy in less-educated girls isn't simply to add more sex ed to the curriculum.

"This is really about adolescent health and development more broadly, so it's really important for us to make sure that kids are in schools and in quality educational programs and that they have opportunities to grow and develop academically and vocationally," she told Reuters Health.

"That is just as important in preventing teen pregnancy as making sure they know where to get condoms."

Report: Top Syrian general joins opposition

BEIRUT (AP) ? The general who heads Syria's military police has defected and joined the uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, one of the highest walkouts by a serving security chief during the country's 21-month uprising, a pan Arab TV station has reported.

Maj. Gen. Abdul-Aziz Jassem al-Shallal appeared in a video aired on Al Arabiya TV late Tuesday saying he is joining "the people's revolution."

Al-Shallal's defection comes as military pressure builds on the regime, with government bases falling to rebel assault near the capital Damascus and elsewhere across the country. On Wednesday, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said government shelling in the northeastern province of Raqqa killed at least 20 people, including women and children.

Dozens of generals have defected since Syria's crisis began in March 2011. In July, Brig. Gen. Manaf Tlass was the first member of Assad's inner circle to break ranks and join the opposition.

Al-Shallal is one of the most senior and held a top post at the time that he left. He said in the video that the "army has derailed from its basic mission of protecting the people and it has become a gang for killing and destruction." He accused the military of "destroying cities and villages and committing massacres against our innocent people who came out to demand freedom."

Thousands of Syrian soldiers have defected over the past 21 months and many of them are now fighting against government forces. Many have cited attacks on civilians as the reason they switched sides.

The Observatory said the shelling in an agricultural area of Raqqa province near the village of Qahtaniyeh killed 20, including eight children, three women and nine others.

An amateur video showed the bodies of a dozen people including children lying in a row inside a room. Some of them had blood on their clothes, while weeping could be heard in the background.

The videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting on the events depicted.

Also Wednesday, activists said rebels were attacking the Wadi Deif military base in the northern province of Idlib. The base, which is near the strategic town of Maaret al-Numan, has been under siege for weeks.

The Observatory said at least five rebels were killed in the fighting that started after midnight. It added that Syrian army warplanes attacked rebel positions in the areas.

"It is the heaviest fighting in the area in months," said the Observatory, which relies on activists throughout Syria.

In October, rebels captured Maaret al-Numan, a town on on the highway that links the capital Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

The attack on Wadi Deif comes a day after rebels captured the town of Harem near the Turkish border. The rebels have captured wide areas and military posts in northern Syria over the past weeks.

Syria's crisis began with protests demanding reforms but later turned into a civil war. Anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in the past 21 months.

In neighboring Lebanon, airport officials in Beirut said Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad and Assistant Foreign Minister Ahmad Arnous flew early Wednesday to Moscow.

Their visit to Moscow comes two days after Assad met in Damascus with international envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi. Brahimi, who is scheduled to go to Moscow before the end of the month, said after the talks Monday that the situation was "worrying" and gave no indication of progress toward a negotiated solution for the civil war.

Brahimi is still in Syria and met Tuesday with representatives of the opposition National Coordination Body, state-run news agency SANA said. Head of the group Hassan Abdul-Azim said Brahimi briefed them on the efforts he is exerting to reach an "international consensus, especially between Russia and the United Stated to reach a solution."

Rajaa al-Naser, NCB's spokesman, said his group has put forward proposals adding that there would be no exit but through halting violence and forming a "transitional government with full prerogatives."

Building Cross-Cultural Relationships Through Simple But Impactful Actions

Each New Year?s Eve I particularly enjoy watching the live broadcasts of celebrations as the clock strikes midnight in each time zone around the world.? Even though not all countries or cultures celebrate New Year?s on the same day or in the same way, seeing these celebrations is a reminder to me of how much we do have in common across cultures.? We look forward to a new year with hope for health and happiness.? We enjoy the camaraderie of our friends and family.? We also like a good celebration.? So often in global leadership we focus on difference, but it is our shared humanity that helps us build bridges across cultures.? For those of us who are knee deep right now in 2013 strategy discussions and action planning, this is the time to reflect on how we can connect in even more genuine ways with our colleagues in the coming year.?

In our research and discussions with international executive coaches, we have found that simple actions often have the greatest impact:

  • Communicate in person.? Whether you visit your colleague in his nation while you are there on business or simply pick up the phone to speak to him, personal interaction is a much more powerful way of communicating than sending an impersonal email.?
  • Show interest.? Build time into your interactions to learn more about what your colleague does in her role and what interests she has outside of work.? It is vitally important that you too are open to sharing this information.? By doing so, you will identify shared experiences and common interests that provide momentum for relationship building.
  • Actively seek input.? Actively involving geographically dispersed colleagues in business conversations and decisions is not just key to relationship building; it is also good for business.? Actively seeking the input and advice of diverse colleagues enriches the understanding of all team members and leads to more informed and culturally appropriate decisions.

Building or Purchasing Your First Real Home | FECEPAC ...

They say that building a home is one of the most stressful decisions you will make. Unlike the purchase of your first family car, this huge financial commitment will quite obviously be a decision made carefully, to meet all of your expectations and of course stay within budget. There are endless questions to be answered, who is a reputable builder, how much space is necessary, is there a need for a 3rd bathroom, should a basement be finished? the list goes on. The future however is bright; let?s take a look at some important facts that will help with your first custom dream home purchase.

What can you afford?

It would be nice to think that the cost of renting will be the same as owning a home, unfortunately we must consider other contributing facts such as property taxes, PMI insurance, down payment, and of course the actual mortgage. Analyze your income, debts, college loans or similar. Combine not just your own, but your partner or family. Remember, a home purchase is a team decision. If you have a reasonably good credit record, but your partner may not, this ultimately will affect chances of acquiring a bank loan. In some situations it might be beneficial to have a financial advisor (unless your education just happens to be in this industry). As a first time home buyer there may be some obstacles on applying for the loan from your bank.

Lets go house shopping!

Once all your numbers are organized and you have a rough idea how much can be spent, the fun part begins? looking for that dream home! Start your research, compare prices, look a various magazines and find a style of home that works for you and your family. Speak with friends and family who have already purchased a home, they may be able to shed valuable advice on how they conducted their own home search.

Many top builders today offer express delivery homes and also offer the option for additional add-ons and upgrades (hardwood floors, trim, appliances etc). Enjoy this time, have fun, and go with your instinct on what?s right for you!

A home buying experience is different for everyone, but remember some of these key facts. And enjoy the whole experience Try not to be stressed with any given situation and think about your options wisely. It won?t be long until the keys are in your hand!

Egypt protesters breach barriers, march on palace

CAIRO (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Egyptian protesters push past barbed wire fences installed by the army and march on the presidential palace, calling for President Mohammed Morsi to "leave" a day after they say he offered no concessions to opposition demands.

Climbing over tanks of the Republican Guard, protesters streamed toward the palace as night fell Friday, crossing a no-go zone set up around the compound's perimeter.

The area witnessed deadly clashes on Wednesday, when supporters of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood group drove out crowds camped outside the palace. The clashes left at least six dead and hundreds injured, deepening the schism between the two sides.

Egypt is plunging deeper into crisis as protesters ? mainly liberals? press Morsi to call off a referendum on a draft constitution agreed by his allies.

Boehner: 'Obamacare is the law of the land' (+video)

In an interview with ABC, Republican Representative John Boehner suggested he will not prioritize the repeal of the healthcare law to the extent that he has in the past. But following the interview, a spokesman for Boehner said repealing the law 'would be on the table.'?

"The election changes that," Boehner, speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, told ABC news anchor?Diane Sawyer?when asked if repealing the law was "still your mission."

"It's pretty clear that the president was re-elected ," Boehner added. "Obamacare is the law of the land."

Under Boehner's leadership, the House tried repeatedly to repeal the healthcare law, the signature domestic measure of Obama's first term. While a few provisions were eliminated or changed,?Senate?Democrats blocked outright termination of the law.

Boehner added that parts of the law were going to be difficult to implement and that everything had to be on the table as lawmakers try to create a path to a balanced budget.

A spokesman for Boehner said later the speaker and House Republicans "remain committed to repealing the law, and he said in the interview it would be on the table."

The 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the biggest overhaul of the $2.8 trillion U.S. healthcare system since the 1960s, aims to extend health coverage to more than 30 million uninsured Americans beginning in January 2014.

The?U.S. Supreme Court?upheld the reforms in a landmark June ruling.

Defeated Republican presidential candidate?Mitt Romney?had vowed to repeal the law if he were elected.

In Tuesday's election, Republicans kept their majority in the House and Democrats maintained control of the?Senate.

In the ABC interview, Boehner also said a comprehensive approach to immigration reform was needed and he was confident that Republicans could find common ground with Obama on the issue.

Sistine Chapel Fresco 500th Anniversary: Despite Volume, No Plan To Limit Tourists (PHOTOS)

VATICAN CITY ? Five centuries after Michelangelo's ceiling frescoes were inaugurated at the Sistine Chapel, at least 10,000 people visit the site each day, raising concerns about temperature, dust and humidity affecting the famed art.

But a Vatican Museums official says there are no plans to try to limit tourists' access.

Museums director Antonio Paolucci cited concerns about the visitor numbers in an article in the Vatican newspaper on Wednesday, the 500th anniversary of the frescoes' inauguration by Pope Julius II.

Like Julius, Pope Benedict XVI plans to celebrate Vespers in the chapel Wednesday evening.

Paolucci says that sometimes as many as 20,000 people daily visit the chapel. But he says that for the time being "the adoption of a maximum number (of visitors) will not be necessary."

(AP) ? A major reshuffle of India's Cabinet left one question dangling: Where is Rahul Gandhi?

The scion of India's Nehru-Gandhi dynasty is not among the new ministers, meaning that if ? as expected ? he leads his Congress party into 2014 elections he will be running for prime minister without ever having held a government post of any kind.

"I would have been happy to include Rahul in the Cabinet, but he has other preoccupations in the party," Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Sunday in announcing his new Cabinet.

Singh, a technocrat, was chosen to fill the prime minister's seat in 2004 by Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi's mother. Singh was widely seen as a regent, keeping the seat warm until Rahul Gandhi ? the son, grandson and great-grandson of Indian prime ministers ? was ready to take his birthright.

But Gandhi has displayed little public sign that he is undergoing any sort of apprenticeship that would prepare him for running the country.

His allies argued he was rebuilding the party at the grassroots level and has taken a lead in the Congress' campaigns in state elections in Uttar Pradesh and in Bihar in recent years. The party performed poorly in both elections.

Gandhi has also positioned himself as the defender of the common people, joining protesters at land rights demonstrations and even getting briefly arrested. But in moments of crisis, he has rarely taken the lead, preferring to defer to Singh or his mother. His forceful speech against corruption in Parliament last year ? during a major anti-graft protest against the government ? was notable for its rarity.

Political analysts say that Gandhi's refusal to take a Cabinet position, and be held accountable for the workings of a government ministry, could prove to be a handicap when the time comes to face the electorate.

"Definitely, the expectations were that Rahul Gandhi would move on from being a learner and take on more responsibility," said Aarthi Ramachandran, who has written a book on him.

It would have helped Gandhi's own credibility if he had taken a position in the government or a ministry where he could have shown results, she said.

"The party could have gone to the people during the election campaign and said, 'This is what Rahul Gandhi has done for the people,'" she said.

Congress leaders said Gandhi would concentrate on reviving the party's fortunes ahead of the national elections instead of being responsible for a narrow Cabinet position.

Digvijay Singh, a Congress general secretary, indicated that Gandhi was expected to assume a larger role in the party hierarchy and an announcement on this was expected in the coming week.

Calls to Gandhi's office were not answered. It was possible that he did not want to be too closely associated with the current government, which has been tainted by a raft of scandals.

The reshuffle Sunday ? needed, in part, to fill seats left vacant after a coalition partner bolted ? brought seven new ministers into the Cabinet and saw the entry of 15 junior ministers in a restructuring that brought younger faces into the leadership.

Former Law Minister Salman Khurshid, who was named the new foreign minister, is 20 years younger than his predecessor, and most of the other ministers sworn in Sunday are in their 50s or early 60s. In Indian politics, that is considered to be a relative youth movement. Singh said the shuffle was the last major Cabinet shake-up expected before the next national election.

But even in promoting some of the younger Congress lawmakers, the party leadership is cautious that they know their place.

"It's an unspoken rule in the Congress that nobody can, or will be allowed to outshine Rahul Gandhi among the younger lot," Ramachandran said.

Other analysts say working among the rural poor, as Gandhi has been doing for the past few years, will give him far greater insight than holding a ministerial job.

"At this point, the need to repair the Congress' image is a greater priority because of the various scams and allegations leveled against the party," said Vinod Sharma, a political analyst with the Hindustan Times newspaper.

Mavs suspend G West for 2nd time in 10 days

DALLAS (AP) ? Mavericks guard Delonte West was suspended Thursday for the second time in as many weeks for conduct detrimental to the team, putting his future in Dallas in doubt.

The first suspension lasted about a day, but a series of tweets by West soon after the team announced the latest suspension raised questions about whether he would return this time.

"Just dont kick me ... on the way out the door," West tweeted. "I didn't do anything to deserve that."

The last of several tweets in just a few minutes said, "I'm just sittin here across from the arena wit tear in my eyes."

West has bipolar disorder and addressed that topic in another tweet, saying "no I'm not off my meds."

After practice Thursday, coach Rick Carlisle refused to elaborate on West, referring to the release from the team announcing the suspension but disclosing no specifics about his conduct.

Donnie Nelson, the team's president of basketball operations, said only that the suspension was effective immediately and no other statements would be issued. The reason for the suspension was the same as the first one that came following an outburst in the locker room after a preseason game Oct. 15.

Carlisle informed players of the latest suspension before practice.

"We're losing a competitor. That's plain and simple. He's a competitor," veteran forward Vince Carter said.

When reached by ESPNDallas.com on Thursday, West said he was being blamed for an argument between teammates after the Mavs' 88-76 preseason loss to the Oklahoma City on Wednesday night in Wichita, Kan. He said he got a text Thursday morning telling him not to come to practice.

"There was an argument between two teammates in the locker room last night that didn't involve me," West told ESPNDallas. "Somehow I'm being blamed for it. I had nothing to do with it. I don't know what's going on."

Carter wasn't with the team for Wednesday night's game. He didn't know about the suspension until he got to practice and hadn't spoken to West.

"It's just a sensitive situation right now. It's not much I can say, I wasn't around to even know what's going on. It's unfortunate," Carter said. "He's my friend, so I want the best for him, and you hope they work the situation out."

Asked if the situation with West could be resolved quickly like the first one, Carlisle again said he wasn't commenting about the guard.

Players wouldn't go into detail about how the situation was explained to them by Carlisle.

"He said what he needed to say and it is what it is. ... Things happen we have no control over," said Shawn Marion, who like Carter remained in Dallas instead of playing in Wednesday's game. "I like Delonte. He's got stuff he needs to work out with them (team management). ... We've still got to go on and focus on our task at hand."

West's latest suspension came five days before the Mavericks open the regular season Tuesday night in Los Angeles against the Lakers.

The Mavs will start the season without Dirk Nowitzki, their 11-time All-Star who is recovering from arthroscopic knee surgery. Chris Kaman, their other 7-footer, is dealing with a strained right calf that makes him questionable for the opener.

"All these things happen, these are part of everyday life in the NBA," Carlisle said. "We've got a lot of veterans that have been through situations where there have been injuries and all kinds of different things. You've got to just. The bus keeps going, got to keep soldiering on."

Instead of lamenting the players not available, Carlisle said his team was going to push forward with the ones they have.

West was suspended for the first 10 games of the 2010-11 season after pleading guilty to weapons charges in Maryland. Authorities say he was carrying three loaded guns and a knife when he was stopped for speeding on a three-wheel motorcycle in 2009.

West was a valuable role player for Dallas last season, even starting 33 games as the backcourt struggled with injuries before he was sidelined himself by a broken finger.

The Mavericks' backcourt grew crowded in the offseason, though. Darren Collison was acquired from Indiana and is expected to start at point guard. O.J. Mayo, a shooting guard, signed as a free agent from Memphis and could be counted on heavily for scoring while waiting for Nowitzki's return.

West played in all seven preseason games, averaging 5 points and 2 assists while playing nearly 18 minutes a game. The eighth-year pro was close to his career averages with the Mavericks last year, at 9.6 points and 3.2 assists.
