Lyon in contention for Perth Test, says Clarke ? Cricket News Update

The Australian Captain, Michael Clarke, disclosed that the spinner, Nathan Lyon is still in contention for the final encounter at Perth against South Africa, coming Friday.

After much speculation that Australia are likely to go to Perth having 4 fast bowlers in the line up like their last year?s appearance at WACA against India, skipper Clarke said, ?He's (Lyon) still a chance, that's for sure, the wicket looks pretty good and I always like having a spinner in the team. Over a five-day period spin will play a part. It does at the Gabba and the WACA. But we need to work out what our best attack is to take 20 wickets. If we think Nathan is part of that, then we go with Nathan. If not, we have the option of going with four fast bowlers.?

After James Pattinson injured himself during the Adelaide Test, and Ben Hilfenhaus and Peter Siddle fully fatigued after their extreme effort towards the end of the game, Australia will enter Perth with a completely new set of bowlers.

Mitchell Johnson is on top of the new bowlers' list in the side after his successful record at WACA and his current form in the domestic season. Mitchell Starc is also likely for the game after he succeeded in impressing the selectors, courtesy a good show in the Sheffield Shield matches.

Josh Hazlewood and John Hastings are also included in the 12-man squad for the match. Both fast bowlers, making a good name for themselves in the domestic arena, have yet to play the first International Test match.

If Lyon is retained by the Australian side, then Hazlewood and Hastings will battle it out for the only slot remaining in the line-up.

With veteran batsman Ricky Ponting announcing his retirement after the Perth Test, the game is expected to be full of emotions for the Australians. However, Clarke feels it will give them more motivation to win the game and pay their respect to the legendary batsman by achieving the top slot in the Test rankings.

??I think it will only give us more inspiration, there's no doubt about it,? Clarke said while talking about Ponting?s retirement call.
